U.S. Space Command, Space Force, SMDC, MDA — Which One Are You Applying To?

Most people searching for "Space Command jobs" are looking for the wrong employer
Not because they want the wrong work — because four different organizations at
Redstone Arsenal get referred to as "space command" in ordinary conversation,
and only one of them is actually U.S. Space Command.
This is not a pedantic distinction. It determines which hiring system you apply
through, which security requirements you face, and whether the organization you
are targeting employs anyone in Huntsville today. Getting it wrong is the single
most common reason a Huntsville space job search stalls out.
Here is the map.
U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM)
What it is: a unified combatant command. It does not own forces of its own in
the way a service does — it is handed forces by the services and employs them
operationally. Think of it as the customer, not the factory.
Where it is: headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs,
relocating to Redstone Arsenal following the September 2, 2025 announcement,
over a period running to roughly 2031. The first permanent operational personnel
arrived on April 15, 2026, when the roughly 80-person Joint Intelligence
Support Element under the J2 Intelligence Directorate
transitioned to Redstone,
and the first operational facility opened on April 29, 2026.
Who it employs in Huntsville today: very few people, relatively speaking.
Projections put roughly 200 personnel at Redstone by the end of 2026 against
a total relocation scope of about 1,400 positions. It is real, it is growing,
and it is currently small.
How you get hired: military positions are filled by assignment, not
application. Civilian positions go through federal hiring on USAJobs. There is no
third door.
If you are searching "U.S. Space Command jobs" expecting a large Huntsville
employer with open reqs, this is the mismatch. The command is arriving, not
arrived — the relocation timeline has the dated detail.
U.S. Space Force (USSF)
What it is: a military service, established December 20, 2019 by the
FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act, sitting under the Department of the
Air Force. Services organize, train, and equip. The Space Force generates the
space forces that combatant commands like USSPACECOM then employ.
Why people confuse it with USSPACECOM: both are new, both say "space," and
the Space Force provides much of USSPACECOM's personnel. They are nonetheless
different institutions with different functions, and the distinction is the one
that most reliably separates people who understand the enterprise from people
who do not — which matters in an interview.
How you get hired: as a Guardian, through military accession. As a civilian,
through federal hiring. Space Force civilian positions exist, but the service's
largest concentrations are not at Redstone.
Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC)
This is the one people actually mean more often than they realize.
What it is: the Army Service Component Command for both U.S. Strategic
Command and U.S. Space Command — the Army's contribution to the space and
missile defense mission. It traces back to the Army Strategic Defense Command
established in 1985, and it has had a major Huntsville presence for decades.
It is not new, not arriving, and not small.
One nuance worth having right: SMDC is split-based, with headquarters
elements at both Redstone Arsenal and Colorado Springs. If you are moving
between those two cities, SMDC is the one organization on this page that already
exists at both ends of your move.
If you have heard someone in Huntsville talk about working "at space command" for
years, before the USSPACECOM relocation was ever announced, SMDC is very often
what they meant. The name collision is genuinely unfortunate and it sends a
steady stream of job seekers to the wrong search.
How you get hired: federal civilian positions through USAJobs, military
through assignment, and a large surrounding contractor ecosystem through private
employers.
Missile Defense Agency (MDA)
What it is: a Department of Defense agency, not a service and not a
combatant command, responsible for missile defense system development.
Headquartered at Redstone Arsenal.
Why it belongs on this list: a great deal of the work that job seekers
picture when they imagine "space jobs in Huntsville" — sensors, missile warning,
C2, systems integration — sits with MDA and its contractors rather than with any
organization that has "space command" in its name.
How you get hired: federal civilian hiring, plus a very large contractor
base.
And the one nobody counts: the contractors
Here is where the actual volume is.
Across the 621 Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal space-domain listings
currently tracked, the overwhelming majority are posted by private employers —
primes and subcontractors supporting all four organizations above — rather than
by any government organization directly.
The clearance distribution is worth knowing before you narrow your search:
311 of those 621 list no clearance requirement at all, 253 require Secret,
and 40 require Top Secret or TS/SCI. Of the 155 that publish a salary range, the
median starting figure is $92,300 and the median top-of-range is

That first figure is the one that changes behavior. Just over half the
space-domain work advertised in Huntsville does not gate on an active clearance
at the point of application — which is close to the opposite of what most people
assume about this market.
So which should you be searching for?
Work backwards from what you want.
You want to be a federal civilian in the space mission at Redstone. Your
targets are SMDC and MDA today, and USSPACECOM increasingly over the next several

You are military. The question is not where to apply but which assignment

employer. You want the contractor market, which is where most of the listings
are and where roughly half the roles do not require a clearance to apply.
You are relocating from Colorado Springs and weighing the money. The 2026
locality payment for Huntsville-Decatur is 21.91% against Colorado Springs at
