What Your Colorado Springs Salary Becomes in Huntsville

Last updated August 8, 2026

The part nobody believes at first

Almost everyone assumes that moving from Colorado to Alabama means taking a pay cut. On the federal side, the opposite is true.

The 2026 locality payment for the Huntsville-Decatur, AL-TN pay area is 21.91%. For Colorado Springs, CO, it is 20.15%. Both figures are from OPM's January 2026 tables, and both incorporate the same 1% General Schedule increase.

So a GS employee whose billet relocates to Redstone Arsenal moves to a higher locality rate — into a metro where housing costs dramatically less. The raise is modest. The direction is what surprises people.

Grade by grade, step 1

Annual rates as published by OPM, effective January 2026.

Grade Colorado Springs Huntsville-Decatur Difference
GS-11 $76,650 $77,772 +$1,122
GS-12 $91,870 $93,216 +$1,346
GS-13 $109,246 $110,847 +$1,601
GS-14 $129,096 $130,987 +$1,891
GS-15 $151,850 $154,075 +$2,225

Because locality is a percentage, the gap widens as you go up. At step 5 a GS-13 gains $1,814 ($123,813 → $125,627). At step 10 a GS-14 gains $2,459 ($167,830 → $170,289).

One exception worth knowing. At the top of GS-15 the difference disappears — both localities hit $197,200 at step 10, because that's the pay cap, not a locality figure. If you're at or near the top of GS-15, your base pay does not change at all with this move.

What follows you, and what doesn't

Your grade, step, and step-increase clock follow you. So do TSP, FERS creditable service, and accrued annual leave. Locality is recalculated to your new duty station — it is not a benefit you carry.

The things that genuinely change are the ones nobody puts in a table: what you pay for a house, what your commute becomes, and whether your spouse's field exists in the new market. The pay delta above is real but small. It is not the number that decides whether this move works for you.

If you're a contractor, none of the above applies

Locality pay is a federal schedule. Contractor salaries are set by the employer and the contract, and they don't track OPM.

Across the Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal space-domain listings currently tracked on our sister job board — 116 postings that publish a salary range — the picture looks like this:

  • 25th percentile: $73,450
  • Median starting figure: $100,000
  • 75th percentile: $130,987
  • Median top of range: $158,322

Clearance requirements across those same 116 roles: 50 require Secret, 4 require Top Secret, 2 require TS/SCI, and 60 list no clearance requirement at all. That last number is the one people find most surprising — roughly half of the space-domain work advertised here does not gate on an active clearance at the point of application.

Figures computed 2026-08-08 from active listings. They describe advertised ranges, not offers.

The honest caveat

This page compares pay. It does not compare cost of living, and I'm not going to hand you a number I can't source properly — the widely-quoted index figures for both metros vary enough between providers that citing one without saying which would be misleading.

What I can tell you is which direction the housing comparison runs, and that it is a far larger factor than the $1,600 a GS-13 gains in locality. If you're weighing this move, the pay table above is the easy part of the arithmetic.

GS figures retrieved from OPM's 2026 salary tables on 2026-08-08 and are current as published. Listing figures are computed from active postings and change as inventory turns over.
