What Has Actually Happened With the Space Command Move — and What Is Still Years Away

The thing most coverage gets wrong

If you have been reading headlines, you would be forgiven for thinking Space Command has moved to Huntsville. It has started to. The distinction matters enormously if you are deciding whether to sell a house in Colorado Springs this year.

Here is the honest version: operational personnel are on the ground at Redstone now, and the permanent headquarters is not expected to be finished until around 2031.

Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and almost nobody presents them side by side.

Confirmed — this has happened

April 15, 2026 — first permanent operational personnel arrive. Staff assigned to USSPACECOM's J2 Intelligence Directorate relocated to Redstone Arsenal. This was the first permanent operational move, not an advance team or a survey visit.

April 2026 — a SCIF opens. A Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility with capacity for more than 80 people was completed at Redstone. For classified work this is the gating infrastructure — you cannot relocate intelligence functions without it.

April 29, 2026 — first operational facility opens. Space Command formally stood up its first working facility at Redstone Arsenal.

Projected — this has not happened yet

End of 2026 — roughly 200 personnel at Redstone. Against a total relocation scope of about 1,400 positions out of the command's roughly 1,700 military and civilian staff. Two hundred is around 14% of the eventual footprint.

2027 — groundbreaking. Construction is planned to begin on an approximately 60-acre site near the center of Redstone Arsenal.

~2031 — headquarters completion, with roughly an additional year for personnel move-in after that.

What this means if you are weighing the move

This is a decade-long program, not a one-year event. If your billet is among the first several hundred, your timeline is now. If it is not, you may be looking at 2028, 2030, or later — and "Space Command is moving to Huntsville" tells you nothing about which group you are in. The question worth asking your chain of command is not whether the move is happening; it is when your function is scheduled, and whether that schedule is funded.

The 2031 date is about a building, not about jobs. Work is already happening at Redstone in existing and interim facilities. Waiting for the permanent headquarters before considering the market would mean sitting out five years of hiring.

Roughly 300 positions are not relocating at all. The scope is about 1,400 of ~1,700. If your role is in the remainder, the relevant question is what stays in Colorado Springs — not what moves.
